Franklin Library was one of thirteen branch libraries during the expansion from 1904 to 1936. The library had the largest collection of Scandinavian media, due to the surrounding population.

South Side Branch, 1890-1914

On April 23, 1890, The South Side Branch was opened in a room on the side of a store. In 1904, all of the Scandinavian language materials were in the South Side branch.

Franklin Library, 1914-present

The land and building were donated to create a library.[1] In the 1920s, it was almost entirely populated by immigrants. Scandinavians, Native Americans and African Americans all were a large part of the library.[2]

In 1998, the Franklin Learning Center was created to help adults with life skills and U.S. citizenship. You learn by yourself or in small groups.[3]

The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It was renovated in 2005 to add technology, while keeping historic.[4]

Franklin Library was one of the 14 libraries made by Minneapolis Public Library before it was combined with Hennepin County Library.

Learning

Franklin Library offers multiple classes, The Franklin Teen Center, The Phillips Technology Center, and the Franklin Learning Center .
