Emperor Kōmei (22 July 1831 – 30 January 1867) was the 121st emperor and head of state of Japan from 1846 until his sudden death in 1867. He was succeeded by his son Emperor Meiji who regained the power that had long been held by the Tokugawa shogunate, which began to crumble during the Komei reign.
