Elementary OS (officially styled as "elementary OS") is a Linux distribution. It is based on Ubuntu LTS. Its goal is "thoughtful, capable, and ethical computing"[1]. The operating system uses the Pantheon desktop environment. It is developed by elementary, Inc.

Design

The design philosophy of elementary OS is very similar to macOS, visually and in user experience.[2]However, the elementary developers say that they have a lot of differences.

The human interface guidelines of elementary OS say that it should instantly be clear how to use a program. The three core rules that the developers set for themselves were concision (shortness), accessible configuration, and minimal documentation.

Pantheon desktop environment

The Pantheon desktop environment uses a lot of code from GNOME, most noticeably GTK. The desktop has multiple workspaces to organize windows.[3]

It has a menu bar and a dock, similar to macOS.

History

elementary OS were originally GNOME themes, and later became its own Linux distribution. [4]

0.1 Jupiter

Published on 31 March 2011, it is the first stable version of elementary OS. It was based on Ubuntu 10.10.

0.2 Luna

In November 2012, the first beta version released. It used Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as its base. The second beta contained more than 300 bug fixes and changes, such as improved localization, support for many displays, and newer applications.

On 7 August 2013, a countdown appeared on the official website. On 10 August 2013, the second stable release of elementary OS was released, along with a redesign of the official website.

0.3 Freya

The name was originally proposed by Danielle Foré to be Isis. However, it was changed to Freya because ISIS was the name of a terrorist group. It used Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as its base. The first beta of Freya was released on 11 August 2014. The second beta of Freya was released on 8 February 2015. On 3 April 2015, a countdown appeared on the official website. The final version was released on 11 April 2015.
