Douglas Jonathan Hamilton (born June 17, 1993) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He currently plays for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, and Carolina Hurricanes.

Before playing in the NHL, Hamilton played parts of four seasons with Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He had a successful time with the IceDogs. He was awarded the Ivan Tennant Memorial Award for being the OHL's top academic high school player in his rookie season.^[1] The next season, Hamilton was named to the OHL Second Team All-Star,^[2] and was awarded both the Bobby Smith Trophy for being the Scholastic Player of the Year,^[3] and the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year.^[4] In the 2011–12 season, he was named to the OHL First Team All-Star,^[5] and won the Max Kaminsky Trophy for being the OHL's most outstanding defenceman and the CHL Defenceman of the Year.^[6][7]

He was drafted 9th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2011 NHL entry draft.^[8] On December 8, 2011, Hamilton signed a three-year, entry-level contract to join the Blackhawks.^[9] On January 19, 2013, Hamilton made his NHL debut in a 3–1 win against the New York Rangers.^[10] Four days later on January 23, he recorded his first NHL point, assisting on a Brad Marchand goal in a 4–3 overtime loss against the New York Rangers.^[11] On February 15, Hamilton scored his first NHL goal against Ryan Miller in a 4–2 loss against the Buffalo Sabres.^[12]

On June 26, 2015 during the 2015 NHL entry draft, the Bruins traded Hamilton to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a 2015 first-round draft pick and two 2015 second-round draft picks.^[13] On June 30, Hamilton signed a six-year, $34.5 million contract to join the Flames.^[14] He played parts of three seasons with the Flames.

On June 23, 2018, the Flames traded Hamilton along with Micheal Ferland and Adam Fox to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin.^[15] He played parts of three seasons with the Hurricanes, finishing the 2019–20 season with a recorded 40 points in 47 games played but his season was cut short after breaking his left fibula.^[16]

On July 28, 2021, Hamilton signed a seven-year, $63 million contract to join the New Jersey Devils.^[17]

Hamilton comes from a family of professional athletes. His father Doug was a rower and his mother Lynn was a basketball player. They both competed for the Canadian national team at the 1984 Summer Olympics with Doug winning a bronze medal. His older brother Freddie was also a professional ice hockey player who played six seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL).^[18]
