Don Nelson

Donald Arvid Nelson (May 15, 1940 – August 9, 2026) was an American professional basketball player and head coach.[1] He coached the Milwaukee Bucks, the New York Knicks, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1976 until 2010. Nelson won five NBA championships playing with the Boston Celtics. He played for them from 1965 to 1976. His number 19 was retired by the team in 1978.[2] He also played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1963 to 1965. His career began with the Chicago Zephyrs in 1962.

Nelson was born in Muskegon, Michigan. He was raised in Sherrard, Illinois and in Rock Island, Illinois. He studied at the University of Iowa.

Nelson died on August 9, 2026 under hospice care in Frisco, Texas from problems caused by a stroke at the age of 86.[3][4]
