Dipesh Chakrabarty (born 1948) is an Indian historian and professor at the University of Chicago. He studies the history of South Asia, the effects of colonial rule, and climate change.[1] He received the Toynbee Prize in 2014 for his work in global history.[2]

Early life and education

Chakrabarty was born in Kolkata, India. He studied physics at Presidency College in Kolkata. He later studied management at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. He received a PhD in history from the Australian National University.[2]

Career

Chakrabarty joined the University of Chicago in 1995.[2] He helped start the Subaltern Studies project. His books include Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference (2000), The Climate of History in a Planetary Age (2021), and One Planet, Many Worlds: The Climate Parallax (2023).[1]
