N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide is an insect repellent. It is also called diethyltoluamide or DEET . Deet is an acronym (/dt/, from DET, the initials of di- + ethyl + toluamide).[1][2] It was developed in the 1940s. Because it is very effective it is still widely used It is a colorless to slightly yellow[3] oil[4] intended to be applied to the skin or to clothing. It protects against mosquitoes, biting flies, ticks, fleas, chiggers, and leeches.[5]

The substance has a number of side effects. In general,small children and pregnant women should not use it.

Usually it is used as an ingredient of insect repellents.
