Conformity Gate

Conformity Gate[a] was a theory about the final episode of the television show Stranger Things from Netflix. Fans of the show thought that most of the things that happened in that episode, or even bigger parts of the final season, were just an illusion created by the show's villain, Vecna. They thought that a new, secret episode would come out on January 7, 2026.

After the season's second volume, or group of episodes, came out, fans were worried about if a lot of content was cut. This was called Cutgate and it created a big online movement. One the finale came out, this became Conformity Gate, and it got a lot of attention on social media. But in the end, no new episode came out.

The huge amount of Netflix users that day crashed the site. Some of them moved their hopes for a new episode to when the season's behind-the-scenes, the documentary film about how the final season was made, would come out, but a new episode didn't come out there as well.

Background and history

The television show Stranger Things, created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix, had its fifth and final season come out within November and December 2025, finishing with "Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up", the final episode, on December 31. It looked like Eleven, the show's hero, dies when the Upside Down, a place in the show, is destroyed. Then, Mike Wheeler, another character, creates a theory that she might still be alive, making her fate unknown. Many journalists said that some audiences didn't like this final episode.[b]

After the season's second volume, or group of episode, came out, fans were worried about how honest the story was, and if it had gaps. This was known as Cutgate, because fans thought that hours of content were cut out of the episodes. One fan wrote a document on Google Docs. The document was a list of anything that they thought was a gap or something missing in the episodes. A petition on the website Change.org, created by Wennii J., a fan from New York, asked for the release of "unseen footage" and over 400,000 people signed it.[1][2][3]

On December 28, Randy Havens, the actor for Mr. Clarke in the show, was the first person to show that Cutgate wasn't real, saying, "There's no secret Snyder Cut of the show. Please don't believe everything some random ass tells you on the Internet."[1][4]

People think that Cutgate became Conformity Gate over time.[5] A TikTok user, amphibiaaccount, was one of the first fans to show the idea that there was a secret final episode. An X user, 67gate, is recognized for creating the name Conformity Gate.[6] The "Conformity" in the name comes from characters in the show conforming, or changing to societal standards. even though the show used to not conform. Once the actual final episode came out, the theory became very popular because of social media, such as TikTok, X, and Reddit.[7]

The belief that the episode's events were just an illusion created by the show's villain, Vecna, spread very quickly there. The date and time of 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET), January 7, 2026 was soon chosen for when a secret and "real" final episode would come out.[8]

In an interview on November 2025, when asked if there were more than one ending for Stranger Things, Matt Duffer said, "We didn’t [...] I love when I hear people do that, but I'm like, 'How do you have the time?' [...] How do they have the energy to write it and then shoot it?"[c] In the end, now new episode came out. Netflix changed its Stranger Things social media accounts to say, in all caps, that "All episodes of Stranger Things are now playing".[8] The same day, on Threads, Randy Havens wrote, "Yes it's the actual finale I'm sorry to all the conspiracy theorists".[2]

Linnea Berthelsen, the actor for the character Kali Prasad, said in an interview that she didn't see the theory a lot because she wasn't online much, saying, "There's a really lovely documentary coming out [...] Which I think is going to be the real deal." She then said that any secret plans would only be known by the Duffers and Millie Bobby Brown, who is the actor for Eleven.[9][10]

Some fans moved the date of when they thought a secret episode would come out to January 12, 2026, the release date of the behind-the-scenes (One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5), the documentary film about how it was made. But no secret episode appeared then either.[11]
