Butterfly Vendetta is an American indie rock band formed in 2007 in Charlottesville, Virginia.[1] The band comprises vocalists/guitarists Bianca Vee and David Dillehunt, bassist Remy Renegade, and drummer John Allietta.[2] Their distinctive sound was described as "searing alt-punk" by columnist Ron Hart of SPIN.[3]

History

The band originated as a side project for filmmaker and composer David Dillehunt, serving as an outlet for his instrumental rock compositions, which were initially released in November 2007 under the name Butterfly Vendetta.[4] The following month, Dillehunt was introduced to Bianca Vee of the former Richmond, Virginia rock band, *454*, and they began creating music together under that name. In July 2008, the duo officially adopted the band name Butterfly Vendetta and released their debut album, Reborn, in November 2009.[5]

Remy Renegade joined Butterfly Vendetta in 2013 and John Allietta joined in 2017.[6] The band has produced 23 official music videos, many of which are co-directed by Vee and Dillehunt.[7] The band's music has been featured in several independent films, notably the 2008 sketch comedy, Craptastic, the 2016 psychological thriller, Oubliette, and the 2024 feature film debut from director Anna Ma, Romeo and Benvolio.[8][9]

Butterfly Vendetta was referenced in a stand-up routine by comedian Lewis Black in May 2015, during a live performance at the Paramount Theater.[10] The band was featured on the cover of the 2018 book, Regarding Charlottesville Music, by photographer and author Rich Tarbell, and in a portrait spread featuring band member, Bianca Vee.[11] Dillehunt chronicled the band in an eponymous 2018 documentary.[12][13]

The band has released seven albums on the indie record label, Half Fast Records.[14][15] Their latest, Adjectives & Expletives, was released on December 5, 2025.[16] Produced by Dillehunt, the album features 14 tracks that explore themes of love and loss.[17][18] Instrumentation was recorded in real-time with vocals added separately.[19] The lead single "U've Been Served" has been featured on SiriusXM's Underground Garage by radio personality, Rodney Bingenheimer.[20][21] The song debuted at #1 on WaveRadio Boston's Strike the Box! and at #31 on the Radio Indie Alliance Top 100 Songs for the week of March 9, 2026.[22][23]
