The Budapest offensive was an offensive by the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany and the Hungarian Government of National Unity during the Eastern Front of World War II that happened in Hungary from October 1944 to February 1945.

A few months earlier, the Soviets advanced in the Balkans and made Romania and Bulgaria changed sides in World War II. In September, the Red Army advanced into Hungary and managed to take Transylvania. The offensive started in October with the main target of taking the Hungarian capital city of Budapest. The Soviet and other Allied forces managed to reach the outskirts of Budapest in December and encircled the city. The Soviets managed to fully take the city from the Axis defenders in February, but the country would not be fully taken until April.
