An aluminate is a type of chemical compound. Formally,[1] it means salts containing aluminium oxyanions, AlxOyz−. The name is also used for mixed oxides of aluminium, MxOy·z Al2O3, even when they do not have aluminium oxyanions.
Ionic aluminate salts are normally made with alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. The anions make hydrates in solution, giving the anions Al(OH)−4 and Al2O(OH)2−6.[2] Some important ionic aluminates are sodium aluminate, which is part of the Bayer process of purifying aluminium ore, and the calcium aluminates, which are a major part of Portland cement.
Aluminate minerals are normally mixed oxides, even those with alkaline earth metals. Spinel[3] and chrysoberyl[4] are the mixed oxide aluminates of magnesium oxide and beryllium oxide.
