The allyl group is a piece of a chemical in organic chemistry. It has a double bond between two carbon atoms, with one attached to a third carbon atom that links to the rest of the molecule. Allyl compounds are a type of alkene.

Chemistry

The two hydrogen atoms on the non-double bonded carbon atom are called allylic hydrogen. The chemical bonds connecting allylic hydrogen atoms to the carbon atom is much weaker than normal hydrocarbon bonds, making allyl compounds more reactive than other hydrocarbons. Allyl radicals, cations, and anions are all stabilised by delocalized electrons across the three carbon atoms.[1]
