Adrian Birch (1872 – 27 July 1932), also known as Shy Birch, was an English football coach and manager.
Birch started his football career at a youth team in Middlesbrough called Vulcan, where he played with future English international footballers Tommy Morren and Fred Priest.[1] He soon joined Middlesbrough F.C. as a player,[1] before becoming the assistant coach to Charlie Harper around the late 1890s or early 1900s. There, he helped the club achieve promotion to the Football League First Division in the 1901–02 season. In 1905, he joined Crystal Palace, helping them to win the Southern League Division Two in his first season. In 1913, he returned to the North East of England with Darlington, where he worked for nearly 20 years.[2]
In 1908, Birch was chosen as a coach for Great Britain's football team at the 1908 Summer Olympics.[1] Between 1910 and 1913, he also worked with multiple Football Association teams on tours.[3] Thanks to this, he was chosen to be the manager of Great Britain's team at the 1912 Summer Olympics, where he helped them win a gold medal.[2][4][5]
Birch's nickname, 'Shy', came from him being known for only speaking when spoken to.[6] Outside of football, Birch worked at a shipyard in the North East of England.[2] He died on 27 July 1932.[3]
