Adobe Atmosphere was a computer program for making and exploring 3D worlds on the Internet. People could build a world on their computer, put it on a website, and let other people walk through it using a free web browser add-on.[1]
The program was first made by a company called Attitude Software, where it was named 3D Anarchy. Adobe Systems bought it in 1999 and gave it the new name.[1]
In a world, each person was shown as a character called an avatar. People could talk to each other by typing messages. Worlds were joined together by "portals", which worked like the links on web pages. Clicking a portal took the user to another world.[2]
The program ran only on Microsoft Windows and worked best with the Internet Explorer web browser.[2]
Adobe Photoshop Album could turn a set of photos into a 3D room that people could walk through and look at the pictures on the walls.[3]
History
Adobe showed the first test version of Atmosphere on March 26, 2001. The full version, called 1.0, came out on October 22, 2003.[1] During the test years, the program was free. When the full version came out, Adobe began to charge money for the part used to build worlds.[2]
In December 2004, Adobe stopped making Atmosphere. The company said the choice was based on the market, what customers said, and its own research.[4] Adobe later added 3D tools to its Adobe Acrobat program, but those were made with technology from a different company, not from Atmosphere.[5]
