McQuaid played hockey in the OHL for 4 seasons with the Sudbury Wolves. He was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the 55th overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft but never played a game with them and was traded to the Bruins for a fifth-round pick.[1] He won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins on June 15, 2011 when the Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in game 7 by a score of 4–0.[2] On July 14, 2011, McQuaid would sign a three-year; $4.7 million contract to stay with the Bruins.[3] In 2013, he would again help the Bruins make it to the Stanley Cup Finals where the Bruins would lose four game to two to the Chicago Blackhawks.[4] He would again stay with the Bruins, signing a four-year, $11 million contract extension contract on June 26, 2015.[5]
On February 25, 2019, the Rangers traded McQuaid back to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Julius Bergman, and both a fourth and seventh round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.[7]
On January 16, 2021, McQuaid announced his retirement from playing professional ice hockey.[8]
Personal life
McQuaid is a Christian and would hold a bible study group when he was a member of the Bruins.[9]
