Tsjadsjøen er historisk en av Afrikas største sjøer. Det er en forholdsvis grunn innsjø, beliggende i grenselandet der statene Tsjad, Nigeria, Niger og Kamerun møtes. En gang var innsjøen den fjerde største i verden. Våtmarksområdet tilknyttet Tsjadsjøen var Afrikas nest største, og hadde et svært rikt dyreliv. Intense tørkeperioder har imidlertid gjort at vannstanden i sjøen har sunket drastisk, og i dag er den bare en tiendedel av den opprinnelige størrelsen. Innsjøens størrelse var i utgangspunktet på 1,5 millioner kvadratkilometer. 90 prosent av vanntilførselen kommer fra elven Chari. Vannstanden i innsjøen er i dag svært lav, men allerede før de verste tørkeperiodene, hadde Tsjadsjøen en dybde på bare fem til åtte meter. Forandringer i gjennomsnittlig årlig nedbør påvirker også innsjøens vannstand ettersom en vesentlig del av sjøens vannvolum er regnvann.[1]
