Søtpotet (Ipomoea batatas) er en rotgrønnsak som tilhører vindelfamilien. Den ligner på potet, men tilhører ikke samme familie. Søtpoteten er avlang og ofte større enn poteten, med rødrosa eller hvitt skall, og hvitt, gult eller lilla fruktkjøtt. Den tilberedes på samme måte som potet.

Søtpoteten kommer opprinnelig fra Sør-Amerika, har en søtlig smak og er rik på blant annet A-, C- og E-vitaminer.

Utbredelse i stillehavsområdet

Da antropologer for første gang kom til Papua Ny-Guinea på 1800-tallet, oppdaget de at søtpoteter ble dyrket av folk i høylandet langt inne på øya, i noe av det mest utilgjengelige terreng som finnes på jorden.[1] Spørsmålet var hvordan planten har kommet dit fra Sør-Amerika.

Ifølge treleddmodellen har søtpotetens utbredelse fra Amerika til stillehavsområdet skjedd i tre steg, først ved polynesiernes kontakt med vestkysten av Sør-Amerika i området ved Peru og Ecuador en gang mellom år 1000 og 1100, så ved at spanske sjøfarere brakte søtpoteter fra Mellom-Amerika til Filippinene tidlig på 1500-tallet og deretter omtrent på samme tid ved portugisiske handelsmenn som spredte søtpotet fra Karibia og Mellom-Amerika til de østlige delene av Indonesia, hvorfra den har spredt seg blant annet til innlandet i Ny-Guinea.[2]
