«Piano Man» er den første singelen til Billy Joel. Den ble utgitt 2. november 1973, og har senere blitt inkludert på flere album, deriblant hans andre studioalbum med samme navn. «Piano Man» er Joels første store hit. I april 1974 havnet sangen på tjuefemteplass på Billboard Hot 100-lista.[1][2] I 2016 ble sangen utvalgt av Library of Congress til bevaring i National Recording Registry med begrunnelsen «culturally, historically, or aesthetically important» (norsk: viktig kulturelt, historisk eller estetisk).[3]

Bakgrunn

«Piano Man» er en fiksjonsfortelling av Joels tidligere jobb som piano-lounge-artist fra 1972–1973 på den nå nedlagte baren Executive Room (baren lå i Wilshire-distriktet i Los Angeles). I en samtale med Actors Studio sa Joel at han måtte komme seg bort fra New York grunnet en krangel han hadde med sitt tidligere plateselskap. Dette førte til at han flyttet til Los Angeles i tre år sammen med den første kona si. Siden han trengte å jobbe for å tjene penger skaffet han seg jobb på Executive Room som barpianist under navnet «Bill Martin» (Joels fulle navn er William Martin Joel). Årsaken til at han valgte et annet alias var at han ikke ville bli gjenkjent.[4]

Joel har forklart at alle karakterene i sangen er basert på virkelige personer.[5] «John at the bar» var en faktisk bartender som jobbet under Joels skift. «Paul is a real estate novelist» refererer til en eiendomsmegler med navnet Paul som satt og jobbet på det han trodde kom til å bli amerikas neste bestselgende roman. «The waitress is practicing politics» refererer til Joels første kone, Elizabeth Weber, som også jobbet som servitør på Executive Room samtidig som Joel spilte piano der.[6]

Musikkvideo

Den første musikkvideoen til «Piano Man» ble utgitt i 1973. Den viser Joel som opptrer som Bill Martin og fremfører sangen. En ny versjon av videoen ble filmet i 1985 med nye sidepersoner, men likevel mer eller mindre lik den forrige. Den originale videoen spilte av en alternativ versjon av sangen med samme lengde, mens den nye videoen tar i bruk albumversjonen.
