Cerro Tololo og Blanco Telescope

Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) er et astronomisk observatorium beliggende på Cerro Tololo i Atacamaørkenen i det nordlige Chile med tilleggsfasiliteter beliggende på Cerro Pachón ca. 10 km sørvest. Teleskopet ligger i Coquimboregionen og ca. 80 km øst for La Serena hvor støttefasilitetene ligger. Stedet ble identifisert av et lag av forskere fra Chile og USA i 1959 og ble endelig valgt i 1962.[1][2] Byggingen startet i 1963, og vanlige observasjoner fulgte i 1965.[3] Byggingen av de store bygningene på Cerro Tololo ble ferdig med fullføringen av Victor M. Blanco Telescope i 1974, men mindre fasiliteter har blitt bygget i ettertid. Cerro Pachón er fremdeles under utvikling med ytterligere to teleskoper innviet siden 2000 og ett er i tidlig fase av byggingen.
