Veselin Topalov (fødd 15. mars 1975 i Ruse) er ein bulgarsk sjakkspelar. På Verdssjakkforbundet FIDE si ratingliste per 1. januar 2009 låg han på førsteplass med ein FIDE-rating på 2796.

Verdsmeister i sjakk

I 2005 vann han FIDE si turnering om Verdsmeisterskapen i sjakk i San Luis i Argentina og vart dermed offisiell verdsmeister i sjakk.

Denne tittelen tapte han i «gjenforeiningskampen» mot Vladimir Kramnik i 2006.

Eit av vilkåra i gjenforeningskampen var at vinnaren - altså Kramnik - skulle delta i VM-turneringa i Mexico City i september 2007. Som eit plaster på såret tildelte FIDE Topalov ein tvikamp mot vinnaren av Verdscupen i sjakk 2007 Gata Kamsky, USA, om retten til å utfordre verdsmeisteren i sjakk Viswanathan Anand til VM-kamp.

Tvekampen Kamsky-Topalov gjekk i Sofia, Bulgaria over 8 parti 16. til 28. februar 2009. Topalov vann kampen den 26. februar etter 7 parti, etter å ha vunne det andre, femte og sjuande partiet - Kamsky vann det fjerde, dei andre tre partia vart remis. Dermed 4,5-2,5 til Topalov.

Tvekampen om verdsmeisterskapen mot Anand er ikkje tidfesta enno, men er planlagt til seinare i 2009.

Tidleg karriere

Topalov lærte å spele sjakk av far sin då han var åtte år gamal. Han viste snart stor framgang, og 1989 vann han VM for ungdom under 14 år i Aguadilja i Puerto Rico. Han blei stormeister i sjakk i 1992.

Topalov har vore førstebordspelar på Bulgaria sitt lag i sjakk-olympiaden (lag-VM i sjakk) sidan 1994. Under sjakkolympiaden i 1994 i Moskva slo han verdsmeisteren Garri Kasparov (sjå under). Dette medverka sterkt til at Bulgaria fekk ein fjerdeplass i meisterskapen.

Sjakk-Oscar

Topalov vann Sjakk-Oscar for året 2005. Sjakk-Oscar blir gitt til den beste spelaren siste år, etter ei avstemming blant sjakkjournalistar og sjakkekspertar verda over. Det russiske sjakkbladet 64 har delt ut prisen sidan 1995.

Sjakk-parti

Topalov har spelt mange gode parti. Han klarte mellom anna å vinne mot Kasparov i det siste sjakkpartiet Kasparov spelte før han la opp i 2005, i siste runde i turneringa i Linares i Spania. Eit av dei mest minneverdige var det ovanfor nemnde partiet mot Kasparov frå sjakk-olympiaden i Moskva i 1994, der Topalov berre var 19 år gamal:
