«Speed King» er ein song av det engelske hardrockbandet Deep Purple frå albumet Deep Purple in Rock frå 1970. Songen er ein av dei mest høglydte på albumet. Ein konsertversjon frå In Concert vart gjeven ut som B-sida til den amerikanske singelen «Black Night».

Teksten til «Speed King» låner mange linjer frå gamle populære rock'n'roll-songar, som «Good Golly Miss Molly», «Tutti Frutti» og «The Battle of New Orleans». Songen var den første som vart skriven av vokalist Ian Gillan,[1] som skreiv teksten frå linjer frå songar av Elvis Presley, Little Richard og Chuck Berry i den rekkefølgja han kom på dei. Kanskje på grunn av dette vart denne songen aldri spelt utan han. Så lenge han har vore i bandet har derimot songen vore fast på konsertane deira.

Studioversjonen

Songen opnar med ein gitarsolo av gitarist Ritchie Blackmore som i stor grad nyttar whammy bar. Bassist Roger Glover, organist Jon Lord og trommeslagar Ian Paice kjem snart inn. Dei fire jammar i lag i eitt minutt, før Lord spelar ein orgelsolo. På den originale amerikanske utgåva av Deep Purple in Rock var denne introen redigert bort. Versjonen på samleplata Deepest Purple starta med orgelet. Orgelsoloen varer nokre sekund, før songen eksploderer med Gillan på vokal. Etter det andre verset er det ein duell mellom orgelet og gitaren, etterfølgd av ein gitarsolo av Blackmore. Etter soloane kjem Ian Gillan inn med særs høge skrik og songen går attende til tredje verset.

Det finst òg ein «Piano version» av «Speed King» på The Deep Purple Singles A's and B's og på 25-årsjubileumsutgåva av Deep Purple in Rock (miksa av Roger Glover).
