Soul (engelsk for 'sjel') er ein musikksjanger som er ei blanding av rhythm & blues og gospel. Soul hadde sitt opphav i USA på slutten av 1950-talet. Rhythm & blues (eit omgrep skapt av Jerry Wexler) er i seg sjølv ei blanding av blues og jazz og oppstod på 1940-talet hos små musikkgrupper, ofte med bruk av saksofon, som bygde på blues-tradisjonen.

Soul er først og fremst ein unik amerikansk musikksjanger og omgrepsapparatet er derfor amerikansk. Soul har stort sett sitt opphav i tre byar: Memphis, Macon og Muscle Shoals - byar som var regionale utpostar og låg langt bort frå den store plateindustrien. Her kunne artistar, låtskriverar og produsentar få sjansen til å definere si eiga rolle utfrå eigne ressursar.

Soul har vore viktig for utviklinga av funk, disco og hiphop. Moderne soulartistar har ofte element av hiphop med i songane sine.
