Sela (persoon)

Sela (Hebreeuws: שֵׁלָה (Sje·lah'); vermoedelijk Smeekbede) is een persoon uit de Bijbel.

Hij is de derde zoon die Juda bij zijn Kanaänitische vrouw heeft verwekt.[1] Zijn oudste broer, Er, was een vrouw genaamd Tamar gegeven. Er stierf echter, dus kreeg Tamar Ers jongere broer Onan. Deze stierf echter ook, maar de jongste broer, Sela, was nog te jong, oordeelde Juda.[2]

Nakomelingen van Sela

Sela's nageslacht worden de Selanieten genoemd.[3] Het boek 1 Kronieken zegt over hen:

21 De zonen van Sela, de zoon van Juda, waren Er, de vader van Lecha, en Lada, de vader van Maresa, en de geslachten van het huis van de linnenwevers in het huis van Asbea.
22 Verder Jokim, en de mannen van Chozeba, en Joas en Saraf (die over de Moabieten geheerst hebben) en Jasubi-Lehem. Dit alles is echter lang geleden.
23 Zij waren pottenbakkers en woonden in Netaïm en Gedera. Zij verbleven daar bij de koning, in zijn dienst.[4]

In het Bijbelboek Nehemia worden ze genoemd onder diegenen die uit Babylonische ballingschap terugkeerden.[5]
