Trakų vartai buvo sudėtinė Vilniaus gynybinės sienos dalis.^[1]

Vartų istorija

Trakų vartai minimi LDK kunigaikščio Aleksandro I privilegijoje.^[2]^[3]

Trakų vartai buvo pastatyti už Pranciškonų bažnyčios prie kelio į Trakus ir Kauną prie dabartinių Pylimo ir Trakų gatvių sankryžos.^[1]^[2]

Trakų vartus yra pavaizdavęs Tomašas Makovskis 1600 m. Vilniaus panoramoje, taip pat Pranciškus Smuglevičius savo piešinyje. Smuglevičiaus piešinyje, Trakų vartai pavaizduoti dviejų kondignacijų, barokiniai. Lango apvadai ornamentuoti, karnyzai suskaidyti. Vartai turėjo nedaug šaudymo angų, todėl jų funkcija veikiau buvo reprezentacinė negu gynybinė. Iš abiejų vartų pusių ėjo gynybinė siena, kurioje šaudymo plyšiai jau įrengti tankiai. Vartų stogas dvišlaitis. Trakų vartus puošė šventųjų paveikslai.^[4]
