Žemaičiai – Vakarų Lietuvoje gyvenantys žemaičių (baltų genties) palikuonys.

Dabar žemaičių etnoso samprata dvejopa. Pagal vieną žemaičiai laikomi lietuvių tautos subetnosu (potaute), kalbantys lietuvių kalbos žemaičių tarme.[1] Pagal šią sampratą šis lietuvių subetnosas kartu yra ir viena iš 5 dabartinių lietuvių tautos etnografinių grupių. Pagal kitą sampratą žemaičiai laikomi atskira tauta, kalbančia žemaičių kalba (žemaičių kalba tarptautiniame ISO registre 2010-06-30 įregistruota kaip savarankiška gyva kalba: ISO 639-3). Šią sampratą palaiko asmenys, save priskiriantys žemaičių tautybei.

Žemaičių tautybę pripažino ir carinė, ir stalininė Rusija. Pagal 1897 metų Rusijos imperijos visuotinio gyventojų surašymo duomenis vien tik Kauno gubernijoje gyveno 444 921 žemaičių tautybės asmenų (lietuvių buvo 574 853). Tuo metu Telšių mieste iš 6205 gyventojų žydų buvo 3080, žemaičių 1275, o lietuvių nebuvo nei vieno. Sovietiniame 1926 metų tautybių klasifikatoriuje žemaičių tautybė taip pat buvo pripažįstama. 2003 m. žemaičių tautybę raštiškai deklaravo keli tūkstančiai Lietuvos Respublikos gyventojų, tai patvirtino nepriklausomas auditas. Siekis grąžinti žemaičių tautybei oficialų statusą teisminiu keliu prasidėjęs 2002 metais tęsiasi iki šiol.

Per 2011 m. surašymą žemaičiais deklaravo save 2169 gyventojai. Daugiausia jų buvo Telšių apskrityje [2], iš 2011 m. rinkimuose į savivaldybes išrinktų tarybos narių vienas asmuo nurodė esantis žemaičių tautybės.[3]
