La parolla venter la riva del latin ventrem. L'è comuna a alter lengov neolatinn (italian ventre, sardegnoeu brente...), ma a nivell popolar l'è doperaa insemma a alter termen, compagn de panscia.
La variant ventro l'è tipega de la Lombardia setentrional: in del Comasch, in sul Lari e in Valtolina. El termen panscia l'è ben doperaa in de la Lombardia oriental, in de la Bassa (Paves, Cremones, Lodesan...) e in del Novares (oltra che in tutt el Piemont e la Liguria).
