하와이 화산 국립공원(Hawai Volcanoes National Park)은 미국 하와이 제도의 하와이섬에 있는 킬라우에아산, 순상화산인 마우나로아산(mauna loa)에 있는 국립공원으로, 주로 킬라우에아산이 많이 차지한다. 킬라우에아산은 정상에 박물관이 있고, 용암을 직접 볼 수 있도록 해주고, 사람들이 용암을 분출하는 모습이나 용암이 바다로 흘러들어가는 것을 볼 수 있게 해준다. 마우나로아산은 등산하여 정상에 있는 칼데라를 보여준다. 킬라우에아산과 마우나로아산은 서로 붙어있기 때문에 마우나로아산도 해당된다. 이 둘중에 킬라우에아산은 세계 최대의 활화산이라고 한다. 정상에 지름 6km의 거대한 칼데라가 있고, 그 안에 있는 대형 화구인 할레마우마우 분화구를 직접 관찰할 수 있다.

역사

하와이 화산 국립공원은 1916년에 설립되었고, 이 곳의 뛰어난 자연 가치를 인정받아 1980년에 생물권보전지역으로 지정되었으며, 1987년 세계유산으로 등재되었다.

특징

이 공원에는 세계에서 가장 활발한 화산의 하나인 킬라우에아산과 세계에서 가장 거대한 순상화산인 마우나로아산(mauna loa)가 포함되어 있다. 또한 공원의 절반 이상이 하와이 화산 야생 지역으로 지정되어 있으며, 색다른 등산과 캠핑을 체험할 수 있다. 이 공원에는 해수면에서부터 4,169m의 높이로, 지구상에서 가장 거대한 활화산인 마우나 로아(mauna loa)가 있는데, 해수면에서부터 산의 정상에 이르는 동안 무성한 열대우림지역에서 건조하고 척박한 사막지역까지 광대한 생육환경의 스펙트럼을 가지고 있다.
