조건부 확률

확률론에서 조건부 확률(條件附確率, 영어: conditional probability)은 주어진 사건이 일어났을 때 다른 한 사건이 일어날 확률을 뜻한다. 원래의 확률 함수를 ${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} }$라고 할 때, 사건 ${\displaystyle B}$가 일어났을 때 사건 ${\displaystyle A}$가 일어날 조건부 확률은 ${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (A|B)}$로 표기한다.

정의

확률 공간 ${\displaystyle (\Omega ,{\mathcal {F}},\operatorname {Pr} )}$ 및 양의 확률의 사건

${\displaystyle A\in {\mathcal {F}}}$

${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (A)>0}$

이 주어졌다고 하자. 임의의 사건 ${\displaystyle B\in {\mathcal {F}}}$에 대하여, ${\displaystyle A}$에 대한 ${\displaystyle B}$의 조건부 확률은 다음과 같다.

이 경우, ${\displaystyle (\Omega ,{\mathcal {F}},\operatorname {Pr} (\cdot |A))}$는 새로운 확률 공간을 이룬다.

이다. 이제 임의의 가산 개의 서로소 사건들 ${\displaystyle {\mathcal {G}}\subseteq {\mathcal {F}}}$이 주어졌다고 하자. 그렇다면 ${\displaystyle \{A\cap B\}_{B\in {\mathcal {G}}}}$ 역시 서로소 사건들이므로

성질

확률 공간 ${\displaystyle (\Omega ,{\mathcal {F}},\operatorname {Pr} )}$ 및 두 사건 ${\displaystyle A,B\in {\mathcal {F}}}$이 주어졌다고 하자. 만약 한 사건이 양의 확률 ${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (A)>0}$을 가질 경우, 두 사건의 교집합의 확률은 조건부 확률을 통해 다음과 같이 나타낼 수 있다.^[1]:15

${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (A\cap B)=\operatorname {Pr} (A)\operatorname {Pr} (B|A)}$

즉, 두 사건이 동시에 일어날 확률은 ${\displaystyle A}$가 일어날 확률과 ${\displaystyle A}$가 일어났을 때 ${\displaystyle B}$가 일어날 확률의 곱이다. 보다 일반적으로, 임의의 ${\displaystyle n}$개의 사건 ${\displaystyle A_{1},\dots ,A_{n}\in {\mathcal {F}}}$에 대하여, 만약 ${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (A_{1}\cap \cdots \cap A_{n-1})>0}$이라면, 다음이 성립한다.

${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (A_{1}\cap \cdots \cap A_{n})=\operatorname {Pr} (A_{1})\operatorname {Pr} (A_{2}|A_{1})\operatorname {Pr} (A_{3}|A_{1}\cap A_{2})\cdots \operatorname {Pr} (A_{n}|A_{1}\cap \cdots \cap A_{n-1})}$

특히, 두 사건 가운데 하나가 양의 확률 ${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (A)>0}$을 가질 경우 다음 두 조건이 서로 동치이다.

• ${\displaystyle A,B}$는 독립 사건이다.
• ${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (B|A)=\operatorname {Pr} (B)}$. 즉 ${\displaystyle B}$의 조건부 확률과 무조건 확률이 일치한다.

임의의 세 사건 ${\displaystyle A,B,C\in {\mathcal {F}}}$에 대하여, 만약 ${\displaystyle \operatorname {Pr} (A\cap B)>0}$이라면, 다음 항등식이 성립한다.
