HR 5171系には少なくとも3つの恒星が含まれている。主星のHR 5171 Aは2つの黄色い恒星が接触して1,304日の周期で公転している接触連星である(それぞれの恒星は「Aa」と「Ab」と呼ばれるが、Catalog of Components of Double and Multiple Starsでは「A」と「C」としている[18] )。接触連星の伴星であるAbは光学干渉法によって直接検出されており、Aaの約3分の1の大きさであるとされている。2つの恒星は、双方を包む物質が恒星自体と同期して回転する共通外層の段階にある。
