Notopalaeognathae (Yuri et al., 2013)[1] è un clade che contiene l'ordine Rheiformes (nandù), il clade Novaeratitae (che include i casuari e gli emù, i kiwi e gli estinti uccelli elefante) e il clade Dinocrypturi (comprendente i tinami e gli estinti moa), apparsi per la prima volta nel record fossile circa 60 milioni di anni fa nel Paleocene.[2][3][4] Notopalaeognathae venne nominato da Yuri et al. (2013) e definito nel PhyloCode da Sangster et al. (2022) come "il clade della corona meno inclusivo contenente Rhea americana, Tinamus major e Apteryx australis".[5] Le relazioni esatte di questo gruppo, compresi i suoi membri recentemente estinti, sono state scoperte solo di recente. I due lignaggi endemici della Nuova Zelanda, i kiwi e gli estinti moa, non sono parenti stretti l'uno dell'altro: i moa sono più strettamente imparentati con i tinamidi neotropicali,[6][7][8][9] e i kiwi sono più imparentati con gli estinti uccelli elefante del Madagascar, insieme a casuari ed emù della Nuova Guinea e dell'Australia.[8] I nandù sudamericani sono il taxon gemello di tutti gli altri notopalaeognati[10] o gemelli dei Novaeratitae.[4] Il gruppo fratello dei Notopalaeognathae è Struthionidae, la famiglia degli struzzi.
