NGC 3412 è una piccola e relativamente vicina galassia lenticolare situata nella costellazione del Leone, a una distanza di circa 33 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]

Scoperta

La galassia è stata scoperta l'8 aprile 1784 dall'astronomo britannico di origine tedesca William Herschel.[1]

Buco nero supermassiccio

Secondo uno studio del 2017 basato sulle osservazioni condotte con il Telescopio spaziale Hubble su una serie di galassie, NGC 3412 contiene un buco nero supermassiccio la cui massa è stimata tra 62,9 e 134 milioni di masse solari.[4]

Gruppo di M96

NGC 3412 fa parte del Gruppo di M96 (noto anche come Gruppo Leo I). Il gruppo comprende almeno 12 galassie tra cui NGC 3299, M95, M96, NGC 3377, M105 (NGC 3379), NGC 3384, NGC 3412 e NGC 3489.[5]

Il Gruppo di M96 è uno dei gruppi che costituiscono nell'insieme il Superammasso della Vergine,[6] e viene considerato uno dei due sottogruppi del Gruppo Leo I; l'altro sottogruppo è il Tripletto del Leone, costituito da M65 (NGC 3623), M66 (NGC 3627) e NGC 3628.[7]
