NGC 3289 è una galassia lenticolare vista di taglio e situata nella costellazione della Macchina Pneumatica, a una distanza di circa 148 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]

Scoperta

La galassia è stata scoperta il 20 aprile 1835 dall'astronomo britannico John Herschel.[1]

Descrizione

Gruppo di NGC 3223

NGC 3289 fa parte del Gruppo di NGC 3223, un gruppo di galassie che comprende almeno 16 membri, tra cui NGC 3223, NGC 3224, NGC 3258, NGC 3268, IC 2552, IC 2559 e IC 2560.[4]

Il Gruppo di NGC 3223 fa parte dell'Ammasso della Macchina Pneumatica (Abell S0636).[5] Le galassie di questo gruppo aventi designazioni New General Catalogue e Index Catalogue, sono le galassie dominanti dell'ammasso della Macchina Pneumatica.
