Miriam Ruth Benzell, detta Mimi (Bridgeport, 6 aprile 1918 – Manhasset, 23 dicembre 1970), è stata un soprano statunitense.

Biografia

Nata in Connecticut nel 1918, Mimi Benzell si trasfersì con la famiglia a New York durante l'infanzia e qui studiò alla James Madison High School, all'Hunter College alla Mannes School of Music. Fece il suo debutto sulle scene nel 1944 quando, all'età di vent'anni, Thomas Beecham la diresse come Zerlina in Don Giovanni e la Regina della Notte ne Il flauto magico a Città del Messico.[1]

Fu nel ruolo dell'Astrifiammante che fece il suo debutto al Metropolitan Opera House nel gennaio 1945.[2] Cantò al Met per cinque stagioni nei ruoli di Barbarina ne Le nozze di Figaro, Blonde ne Il ratto dal serraglio, il Mago Rugiadino in Hänsel e Gretel, Ellen in Lakmé, l'uccellino della foreta nel Sigfrido, Gilda in Rigoletto,[3] Micaëla in Carmen, Marzelline in Fidelio, Musetta ne La bohème,[4] Philine in Mignon e la nobile orfana e la modista ne Il cavaliere della rosa.[5]

Nel 1961 esordì a Broadway nel musical Milk and Honey di Jerry Herman.[6]

Sposata con Walter Gould (fratello di Morton) e madre di due figli, morì di cancro nel 1970 all'età di 52 anni.[1]
