Eoserranus (Woodward, 1908)[1] è un genere estinto di pesci ossei percomorfi d’acqua dolce vissuto in India durante il Cretaceo superiore. Il genere comprende una sola specie, E. hislopi, proveniente dal Maastrichtiano superiore della Formazione Lameta nello stato del Maharashtra.[2]

Classificazione

Il nome del genere, che significa "Serranus dell’alba", si riferisce al fatto che inizialmente si pensava fosse imparentato con i serranidi; studi più recenti lo interpretano invece come un percomorfo primitivo di affinità incerte. Eoserranus rappresenta uno dei pochi percomorfi noti del Cretaceo e uno dei rarissimi casi documentati da resti scheletrici articolati, comprendenti grandi crani e alcuni resti postcranici provenienti da alcune località del Maharashtra come Dongargaon e Mawal.[3][4][5]

Stratigrafia

Dal punto di vista stratigrafico, gli strati che hanno restituito Eoserranus sono interpretati come prossimi, o forse attraversanti, il limite tra i cron magnetici C29R e C30N[6] collocando questi fossili circa 300.000–200.000 anni prima del limite Cretaceo–Paleogene[7].
