Rachel Ashley Platten[1] (lahir 20 Mei 1981) adalah seorang penyanyi dan penulis lagu asal Amerika Serikat. Ia merilis tiga album independen pada rentang tahun 2003 hingga 2014, sebelum dikontrak oleh Columbia Records di awal tahun 2015.

Popularitasnya meningkat pada tahun 2015 ketika ia merilis singel "Fight Song", yang berhasil menduduki peringkat enam pada US Billboard Hot 100, memuncaki tangga lagu di Britania Raya serta berhasil masuk sepuluh besar pada berbagai tangga lagu di seluruh dunia. Platten memenangi sebuah Emmy Award untuk penampilan langsungnya pada acara Good Morning America. Album debut label utamanya, Wildfire, yang dirilis tahun 2016, mendapatkan sertifikasi emas oleh Asosiasi Industri Rekaman Amerika Serikat serta menampilkan pula "Stand by You" dan "Better Place".

Kehidupan awal

Platten lahir pada 20 Mei 1981, di New York City dari ibu berketurunan Irlandia, serta besar di Newton Centre, Massachusetts dan bersekolah di Mason-Rice Elementary School.[2] Ia dibesarkan sebagai seorang Yahudi.[3][4] Platten mempelajari piano klasik sejak usia 5 tahu dan kemudian mempelajari gitar di sekolah menengah. Ia bersekolah di Sekolah Menengah Buckingham Browne and Nichols, dimana ia menjadi penyanyi pada grup menyanyi sekolah. Di Trinity College, ia merupakan anggota Trinity College Trinitones, grup a capella seluruh-perempuan pertama di perguruan tersebut.

Sebagai bagiann dari program studi ke luar negeri, ia berangkat menuju Trinidad untuk mengikuti magang di sebuah kantor diplomat dan pada sebuah label rekaman. Ketika ia disana, ia menjadi penyanyi latar bagi band rekannya di hadapan lebih dari 80,000 orang di final International Soca Monarch pada tahun 2002. Menurut Platten, sejak saat itu ia tahu bahwa ia harus mengejar karier bermusiknya secara penuh.[5]

Platten lulus dari Trinity College dengan gelar di bidang hubungan internasional pada tahun 2003. Ia kemudian pindah ke Greenwich Village di New York City dan tampil bersama band cover Prince serta Sly and the Family Stone bernama Dayz of Wild. Ia menampilkan musik solonya di sekitar Village dan kemudian mulai melakukan tur di negara tersebut.

Ia telah bekerja dengan berbagai kegiatan amal, Musicians on Call (di mana ia bernyanyi di samping tempat tidur untuk pasien rumah sakit) selama 11 tahun dan ia juga merupakan duta Music Unites. Dia juga bekerja dengan Yayasan Ryan Seacrest dan menjadi duta untuk Live Below the Line, sebuah panggilan untuk mengakhiri kemiskinan dunia.

Kehidupan pribadi

Pada tahun 2012, Platten menikahi Kevin Lazan dalam suatu perayaan Yahudi.[6]
