Moritz Steinschneider

Moritz Steinschneider (lahir 30 Maret 1816 di Prusants, Morowia, Austria - meninggal pada tahun 1907) adalah seorang orientalis asal Austria yang dijuluki "bapak kepustakaan Yahudi modern".[1][2] Ia merupakan orientalis yang ahli dalam bahasa Ibrani.[1] Selama hidupnya, ia memiliki konsentrasi keilmuan kepada studi hubungan antara budaya Yahudi dan umum, terutama pada abad pertengahan.[2] Kecenderungan ilmiahnya dapat dilihat dari keuletannya dalam mempelajari dan memahami manuskrip-manuskrip Yahudi.[1]

Steinschneider lahir di lingkungan keluarga Yahudi.[1] Sejak kecil ia mempelajari bahasa Ibrani di bawah asuhan ayahnya, Ya'qub, seorang ahli dalam memahami Talmud.[1] Pada tahun 1836, ia pergi ke Wina untuk mempelajari kajian sastra Timur dan sastra Ibrani modern.[1][2] Steinschneider memiliki bakat yang terlihat dalam hal bibliografi, dan inilah yang kemudian ia tekuni dengan sungguh-sungguh.[1] Ia juga belajar di Universitas Wina dan masuk dalam fakultas Teologi Katolik.[1][2] Di fakultas tersbut ia belajar bahasa Arab, Ibrani dan Suryani.[1]

Steinschneider termasuk ilmuan yang giat dan produktif dalam menghasilkan karya.[1] Ia telah menulis 1400 karya ilmiah.[1][2] Dari karya-karyanya yang paling menonjol adalah seputar penyusunan berbagai indeks (kepustakaan) literatur, seperti indeks manuskrip bahasa Ibrani, indeks buku-buku Yahudi yang ia tulis dalam bahasa Arab dan kepustakaan terjemahan bahasa Yunani dari bahasa Arab.[1]
