Michael Joseph (penerbit)

Michael Joseph (26 September 1897 – 15 Maret 1958) adalah seorang penerbit dan penulis asal Inggris.

Kehidupan awal dan karier

Joseph lahir di Upper Clapton, London. Ia bertugas dalam British Army saat Perang Dunia Pertama, dan kemudian menjalani karier menulis, buku pertamanya adalah Short Story Writing for Profit (1923).[1]

Setelah menjadi agen kesusastraan untuk Curtis Brown, Joseph mendirikan percetakannya sendiri sebagai sebuah cabang dari Victor Gollancz Ltd. Gollancz menginvestasikan £4000 dalam Michael Joseph Ltd, yang didirikan pada 5 September 1935.[2] Joseph dan Victor Gollancz tak sepakat pada beberapa titik dan Michael Joseph keluar dari Gollancz Ltd pada 1938 setelah Gollancz berniat untuk menyensor Across the Frontiers karya Sir Philip Gibbs atas dasar politik.[1][2] (Joseph menerbitkan edisi pertamanya pada 1938 dan edisi revisi pada Mei berikutnya.) Beberapa pengarang yang karyanya Joseph terbitkan adalah H. E. Bates, C. S. Forester, Monica Dickens, Richard Llewellyn, Joyce Cary, Richard Gordon dan Vita Sackville-West.[2]
