Pendahulu gagasan

Buku tersebut datang lima tahun setelah Charles Darwin dan Alfred Russel Wallace mengumumkan teori evolusi mereka dengan pengartian seleksi alam,[1] dan empat tahun setelah publikasi Origin of Species oleh Darwin.
