Kampung memiliki beberapa arti, antara lain:

  1. Suatu daerah, di mana terdapat beberapa rumah atau keluarga yang bertempat tinggal di sana.
  2. Daerah tempat tinggal warga menengah ke bawah di daerah kota.
  3. Sebagai pembagian administratif tingkat IV: nama alternatif untuk desa/kelurahan yang merupakan satuan pembagian administratif daerah yang terkecil di bawah kecamatan/ mukim/ distrik/ banua (benua). Kampung sebagai sinonim dari istilah desa ini dipakai di Lampung (Kab. Lampung Tengah, Tulangbawang, Tulangbawang Barat, Mesuji, dan Way Kanan), Papua, dan Kalimantan Timur (Berau dan Kutai Barat). Sebuah kampung dipimpin oleh seorang Kepala Kampung (Kamponghofd) sinonim dari kepala desa.
  4. Sebagai pembagian administratif tingkat V: nama alternatif untuk dusun/banjar/padukuhan/rukun kampung (RK)/anak kampung, yang semua itu merupakan bagian dari sebuah desa/kelurahan. Kampung sebagai sinonim dari dusun ini dipakai di Jawa, Nusa Tenggara Barat, dan tempat-tempat tertentu.
  5. Sebagai pembagian administratif tingkat V di Malaysia

Istilah kampungan juga sering digunakan untuk merujuk kepada sikap-sikap terbelakang, tidak tahu tata-krama dan sebagainya.

Ada kemungkinan kata kampung diambil dari bahasa Portugis; campo, tempat perkemahan.[1] Nama-nama daerah di Kamboja sering disebut kompong yang merupakan sebuah distrik sering kali juga dipakai sebagai nama provinsinya. Istilah kampung dalam bahasa Aceh disebut gampong dan dalam bahasa Minang disebut kampuang. Istilah kampung biasanya disingkat dengan Kp (di Indonesia) atau Kg (di Malaysia).[2]
