HPFS

Sistem berkas HPFS (High Performance File System) adalah sebuah sistem berkas yang dibuat secara spesifik untuk sistem operasi IBM OS/2 untuk menggantikan sistem berkas FAT yang memiliki beberapa keterbatasan. Sistem berkas ini dibuat oleh Gordon Letwin dan beberapa developer lainnya dari Microsoft, dan ditambahkan ke dalam sistem operasi OS/2 versi 1.2, karena pada saat itu sistem operasi tersebut dikembangkan bersama-sama antara Microsoft dan IBM, dan dirilis pada tahun 1988.[1]

Peningkatan yang terdapat dalam HPFS adalah sebagai berikut:

  • Dukungan terhadap nama berkas yang memiliki campuran antara huruf kapital dan huruf kecil, dalam format codepage yang berbeda. Dibandingkan dengan sistem berkas FAT yang hanya menggunakan karakter huruf kapital saja, ini merupakan peningkatan yang cukup signifikan.
  • Dukungan terhadap nama berkas yang panjang, hingga 256 karakter. Dibandingkan dengan sistem berkas FAT yang hanya mendukung 11 karakter saja, jelas hal ini merupakan peningkatan yang signifikan.
  • Menggunakan ruangan hard disk secara lebih efisien, karena HPFS menggunakan unit alokasi yang tidak terdiri dari beberapa sektor, melainkan menggunakan sektor sebagai unit alokasi terkecilnya.
  • Fragmentasi yang jarang terjadi.
  • Tambahan atribut stempel waktu, yang dapat menyimpan kapan terakhir berkas dimodifikasi, kapan terakhir berkas diakses, serta kapan berkas dibuat. Sistem berkas FAT hanya menyediakan satu buah atribut stempel waktu, yakni kapan berkas terakhir dimodifikasi.
  • Struktur direktori yang menggunakan b-tree.
  • Directori akar yang diletakkan di tengah-tengah hard disk. Dibandingkan dengan FAT yang menyimpan direktori akar pada lokasi setelah tabel alokasi berkas dan memiliki alokasi terbatas.
