Elizabeth Vargas (lahir 6 September 1962) adalah wartawati televisi Amerika Serikat. Ia sekarang membawakan majalah berita 20/20 di jaringan televisi ABC dan jangkar liputan khusus ABC News.

Karier

Vargas lahir dari ibu keturunan Irlandia-Amerika dan ayah orang Puerto Rico berpangkat kolonel di Angkatan Darat Amerika Serikat. Sewaktu kecil ia sering dibawa berpindah-pindah mengikuti tugas ayahnya di pangkalan militer AS di Jerman, Belgia, dan Jepang.

Setelah lulus dari Universitas Missouri dengan gelar sarjana jurnalisme, Vargas memulai karier sebagai reporter dan pembawa berita di KOMU-TV.

Setelah empat tahun sebagai reporter dan pembawa berita di televisi WBBM-TV, Phyllis McGrady (wakil direktur senior ABC) menilainya, "Elizabeth adalah salah satu penyiar berbakat dan paling fleksibel yang pernah bekerja untuk saya. Dia bisa melakukan wawancara, dan memandu acara istimewa selama berjam-jam yang membuatmu harus berpikir, dan lalu dia melakukan wawancara yang menarik dengan P. Diddy. Dia serba guna."

Pada tahun 1999, Vargas memenangi Penghargaan Emmy untuk kisah Elián González. Pada tahun sebelumnya, ia dinominasikan sebagai penerima Penghargaan Emmy untuk liputan kasus Betty Tyson di 20/20.

Pada bulan April 2005 sewaktu Peter Jennings menjalani kemoterapi untuk mengobati kanker paru-paru, Vargas bersama Charles Gibson bertugas membawakan ABC World News Tonight untuk sementara hingga Jennings meninggal dunia pada bulan Agustus 2005. Setelah lewat masa berduka, Vargas bersama Bob Woodruff dipilih membawakan World News Tonight sejak 5 Desember 2005. Pada 23 Mei 2006, Vargas yang sedang hamil mennyatakan pengunduran dirinya dari World News Tonight. Sejak 29 Mei 2006, program berita tersebut dibawakan sendirian oleh Gibson.[1] Vargas menjelaskan bahwa dokter menyarankannya untuk mengurangi kegiatan selama hamil. Kalau bayinya sudah lahir, ia ingin lebih banyak berada di rumah.[2] Vargas kembali pada akhir tahun 2006 sebagai salah seorang pembawa acara 20/20 dan liputan khusus ABC.

Kehidupan pribadi

Andre Agassi memperkenalkan Vargas dengan penyanyi/pencipta lagu Marc Cohn di kejuaraan tenis AS Terbuka tahun 1999. Keduanya menikah dan dikaruniai dua anak laki-laki, Zachary Raphael Cohn (lahir 31 Januari 2003) dan Samuel Wyatt Cohn (lahir 16 Agustus 2006).[3] Vargas memiliki dua anak tiri, Max dan Emily dari mantan istri Cohn.
