Academy of Country Music (ACM) didirikan pada 1964 di Los Angeles, California sebagai Country & Western Music Academy. Beberapa orang yang terlibat dalam pendiriannya adalah Eddie Miller dan Tommy Wiggins, yang ikut serta dengan Mickey Christensen dan Chris Christensen. Mereka ingin mempromosikan musik country di 13 negara bagian wilayah barat dengan dukungan artis yang berbasis di West Coast.
