עשו הוא רומן מאת הסופר הישראלי מאיר שלו, שיצא לאור בשנת 1991[1]. זהו הרומן השני של מאיר שלו, ואף הוא כקודמו הפך לרב-מכר עם צאתו לאור, ומכר 55,000 עותקים תוך חצי שנה[2]. מקור שמו של הספר בעובדה כי המספר מכנה עצמו "עשו". גם ספר זה, בדומה לספרו הראשון[3], נסוב סביב ההוויה החברתית, החלוצית והחקלאית של התקופה שבטרם הקמת המדינה, של המתיישבים הראשונים במושבים, במושבות ובקיבוצים. במהלך 1992 תורגם ופורסם הספר להולנדית, צרפתית, גרמנית אנגלית ועוד[4].

בשנת 2016 יצא כספר מוקלט בקריינותו של שדרן הרדיו בועז כהן. הספר עובד לסרט קולנוע באותו שם, בבימויו של פאבל לונגין ובכיכובם של הארווי קייטל, ליאור אשכנזי, מארק איווניר, יוליה פרסילד וגילה אלמגור[5].

בשיחה שנערכה עמו בשנת 2020[6], בחר מאיר שלו בספר זה כאהוב עליו מבין הספרים שכתב למבוגרים.

סיפור העלילה

הספר מתאר את קורותיה של משפחת אופים המתגוררת בשפלה ומקורה בירושלים. בספר מתוארת ראשיתה של המשפחה בירושלים והקורות אותה עד שהשתקעה בשפלה והקימה את המאפייה. המספר מכנה עצמו "עשו" ומספר את סיפורו בשנת 1978 עם שובו לכפר בו גדל, לאחר 30 שנה בהן חי בארצות הברית, לאחר שנודע לו על ההחמרה במחלת אביו. הוא פוגש שוב את אחיו התאום, יעקב, אביהם של רומי ומיכאל. יעקב הוא גם אביו השכול של בכורו, בנימין, ששירת כלוחם ביחידה מובחרת[7], ונהרג מאש ידידותית בעת פעולה מבצעית. בהמשך מתברר כי "עשו" עזב לאחר שבשנת 1948 הוכרעה סוגיית הירושה בין התאומים, ממש כמסופר בפרקי ספר "בראשית": יעקב זכה גם במאפייה וגם בלאה היפה, ואילו "עשו" עזב את הכפר לארצות הברית שם כתב ספר שנושאו "לחם" וכל הסיפורים בו הם פרי דמיונו העשיר. בעשו נתקיימה נבואתה של אמו: "לא יהיה לך משפחה. לא יהיה לך ילד. לא יהיה לך אדמה"[8]. דמותו של שלו מופיעה לרגע בספרו, בחור צולע עם משקפיים, אשר הוא חברו של בנימין מן הסיירת שנפצע בתקרית בה נהרג, המתרועע עם רומי[9].
