נביא (ביתא ישראל)

נביא (בגעז: ነቢይ)[1] הוא תפקיד דתי שהתקיים בעבר בקרב ביתא ישראל. המקור ההיסטורי הקדום ביותר שהוא גם היחיד שמזכיר נביאים כחלק מהיררכיה הדתית של ביתא ישראל הוא ההגיוגרפיה של הנזיר האתיופי תכלה חווריית מן המאה ה-15.[2] על פי אסרס הנביא הוא נזיר העומד בראש קבוצת נזירים.[3]

חלק מאלו המסתמכים על ההגיוגרפיה ועל מחקר הקהילה שאינו כולל מחקרים על קיומם של נביאים טוענים שמחברו לא הכיר את ההיררכיה הדתית של ביתא ישראל ושתפקיד כזה לא התקיים ושייתכן שמדובר למעשה בנזיר או בכהן.[4]
