מרי אן בריטלנד (באנגלית: Mary Ann Britland, נולדה בשם מרי אן האג[1]; 1847 – 9 באוגוסט 1886) הייתה רוצחת סדרתית בריטית. היא הייתה האישה הראשונה שהוצאה להורג בתלייה במנצ'סטר.

ביוגרפיה

בריטלנד נולדה בבולטון בשנת 1847. בשנת 1866 נישאה לתומאס בריטלנד,[2] ולשניים נולדו שתי בנות.[3] בריטלנד החזיקה בשתי משרות; היא הייתה עובדת במפעל ביום וברמנית בלילה.

מעשי הרצח

בפברואר 1886 קנתה בריטלנד רעל עכברים בבית מרקחת סמוך לביתה. מכיוון שהרעל הכיל סטריכנין וארסן, היא נדרשה לחתום בפנקס הרעלים.

במרץ 1886 מתה בתה הבכורה, אליזבת' האנה. מותה יוחס לנסיבות טבעיות, ומרי אן תבעה את ביטוח החיים של בתה.

ב-3 במאי 1886 מת בעלה, תומאס. מותו יוחס לאפילפסיה, ומרי אן תבעה גם את ביטוח החיים שלו.

לאחר מותו, שכניה תומאס ומרי דיקסון הזמינו אותה לגור זמנית בביתם. ב-14 במאי באותה שנה, מתה מרי דיקסון. בבדיקה הפתולוגית התגלתה בדמה כמות קטלנית של רעל עכברים. מרי אן נחקרה על אודות מותה של שכנתה והודתה כי היא ושכנה תומאס דיקסון ניהלו רומן. היא רצחה את בתה מפני שזו חשדה בכוונותיה הפליליות, ולאחר מכן המשיכה לרצוח גם את בעלה וגם את אשתו של מאהבה.[4]

המשפט וההוצאה להורג

משפטה של מרי אן בריטלנד החל ב-22 ביולי 1886. חבר המושבעים התמהמה זמן מה בהחלטה על פסק הדין, אך בסופו של דבר הם מצאו אותה אשמה בשלושת מעשי הרצח. לאחר פסק הדין היא הצהירה בפני בית המשפט: "אני חפה מפשע לחלוטין, אינני אשמה כלל". בנוגע לתומאס דיקסון קבע חבר המושבעים כי הוא לא נטל חלק במעשי הרצח.

ב-9 באוגוסט 1886 בבוקר הובלה בריטלנד אל הגרדום, כשהיא נתמכת בשתי סוהרות. היא זעקה וביקשה רחמים,[5] אך הוצאה להורג על ידי התליין ג'יימס ברי.[6][7]
