הארייט רבקה ליין (באנגלית: Harriet Rebecca Lane‏; 9 במאי 1830 – 3 ביולי 1903) הייתה אחייניתו של נשיא ארצות הברית הרווק ג'יימס ביוקנן, ושימשה כגברת הראשונה של ארצות הברית בין השנים 1857–1861.

ביוגרפיה

הארייט ליין הייתה בתו הצעירה של הסוחר אליוט טול ליין (Elliott Tole Lane) וג'יין ביוקנן ליין (Jane Buchanan Lane). אמה של הארייט, ג'יין, נפטרה בהיותה בת 9, ואביה נפטר בהיותה בת 11. הילדה ביקשה להתגורר עם דודה, ג'יימס ביוקנן, אשר כיהן כסנאטור דמוקרטי מטעם מדינת פנסילבניה. לבקשתה מונה ביוקנן כאפוטרופוס שלה.

הארייט התחנכה בפנימיות בצ'ארלסטון (אז חלק מווירג'יניה, כיום וירג'יניה המערבית), ולאחר מכן במכללת מנזר הביקור (Academy of the Visitation Convent) בג'ורג'טאון שבוושינגטון הבירה (היה זה בתקופה בה כיהן ביוקנן כמזכיר המדינה).

בשנת 1854 הצטרפה הארייט לביוקנן בלונדון, שם כיהן כשגריר ארצות הברית לארמון סנט ג'יימס. הארייט פגשה את המלכה ויקטוריה אשר העניקה לה את התואר "אשת השגריר", והייתה פופולרית בקרב החברה הגבוהה הלונדונית.

בעת שמונה ביוקנן לנשיא בשנת 1857 התגוררה הארייט עמו בבית הלבן. החברה הגבוהה של וושינגטון העדיפה את הארייט העליזה ואוהבת המסיבות על הממשל של קודמו - פרנקלין פירס, בו היה שרוי הבית הלבן באבל תמידי (בשל אבלה של ג'יין פירס). הארייט כונתה "המלכה הדמוקרטית" ואירחה אירועים רבים בבית הלבן. הארייט הפכה למודל לחיקוי - נשים חיקו את סגנונות לבושה ותסרוקותיה, ורבים קראו לבנותיהם על שמה.

בהיותה בבית הלבן ניצלה הארייט את השפעתה לנסות לקדם את עניינם של האינדיאנים באמריקה שהיו חסרי זכויות וחיו במצב קשה. כמו כן פעלה הארייט לחיזוק התרבות בארצות הברית על ידי הזמנת אומנים ומוזיקאים לבית הלבן והצגתם לחברה הגבוהה בוושינגטון. בשל פעולותיה אלו נחשבת הארייט לראשונה מבין "הגברות הראשונות המודרניות".

בעת שגברו החיכוכים בין המדינות (חיכוכים שהובילו מאוחר יותר לפרישה של מדינות שונות מהאיחוד) הקפידה הארייט על סידורי הישיבה באירועים בבית הלבן על מנת למנוע מיריבים פוליטיים לשבת זה ליד לזה, במטרה למנוע חיכוכים.

עם פרישתו של ביוקנן עברו הוא ואחייניתו להתגורר בביתו בויטהד שבלנקסטר שבפנסילבניה.

הארייט נישאה בגיל 36 להנרי אליוט ג'ונסון, בנקאי מבולטימור. שני בניה מתו זמן קצר לאחר לידתם ובעלה נפטר זמן קצר לאחר מות בנה השני.

לאחר מות דודה, הארייט שבה לוושינגטון. במותה, בשנת 1903 הורישה למדינה את אוסף האומנות הגדול שלה. האוסף הועבר למכון הסמית'סוניאן ונקרא "אוסף הגברת הראשונה לאמנות", ולימים הפך לחלק מרכזי של מוזיאון סמית'סוניאן לאמנות אמריקאית.

סכום כסף נוסף שהורישה לבית החולים ג'ונס הופקינס בבולטימור, שימש להקמת קליניקה לילדים הפועלת עד היום.

הארייט נקברה בבית הקברות גרינמאונט בבולטימור שבמרילנד.
