החוק האמפירי, הידוע גם בשם חוק 68-95-99.7, הוא חוק בסטטיסטיקה והסתברות הקובע כי בהתפלגות נורמלית, כ-68% מהנתונים ייכנסו לסטיית תקן אחת מהממוצע, כ-95% מהנתונים ייפלו בתוך שתי סטיות תקן מהממוצע, וכ-99.7% מהנתונים ייפלו בתוך שלוש סטיות תקן מהממוצע.

כלל זה מבוסס על תכונות ההתפלגות הנורמלית, שהיא עקומה בצורת פעמון שהיא סימטרית על הממוצע. ההתפלגות הנורמלית משמשת לעיתים קרובות למודל נתונים מהעולם האמיתי מכיוון שהיא מסוגלת לתאר מגוון רחב של תופעות.

החוק האמפירי חל רק על התפלגויות נורמליות. אם מערך נתונים אינו מתפלג נורמלית, ייתכן שהכלל האמפירי לא יהיה ישים.

באמצעות החוק, נוכל לחשב את שיעור הנתונים הנופל בטווחים מסוימים של הממוצע באופן הבא:

  • כ-68% מהנתונים נופלים בתוך סטיית תקן אחת מהממוצע: 90 עד 110
  • כ-95% מהנתונים נופלים בתוך 2 סטיות תקן של הממוצע: 80 עד 120
  • כ-99.7% מהנתונים נופלים בתוך 3 סטיות תקן של הממוצע: 70 עד 130.

בצורה פורמלית

  • 68% מהנתונים נופלים בתוך סטיית תקן אחת מהממוצע: μ - σ < x < μ + σ
  • 95% מהנתונים נופלים בתוך 2 סטיות תקן של הממוצע: μ - 2σ < x < μ + 2σ
  • 99.7% מהנתונים נופלים בתוך 3 סטיות תקן של הממוצע: μ - 3σ < x < μ + 3σ
