Salvador Antonio Valdés Mesa, nado en Cuba o 13 de xuño de 1945, é un político e ex-dirixente sindical cubano. É o primeiro vicepresidente dos Consellos de Estado e de Ministros de Cuba dende o 19 de abril de 2018. Foi un do cinco vicepresidentes do Consello de Estado dende febreiro de 2013 até abril de 2018 e integra o Buró Político do Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) dende o ano 2008. Foi secretario xeral da Central de Traballadores de Cuba entre 2006 e 2013.

Traxectoria

Salvador Valdés formou parte da Asociación de Mozos Rebeldes (AJR) dende 1961, logo do triunfo da Revolución Cubana. Comezou a súa actividade laboral como traballador agrícola até graduarse de enxeñeiro agrónomo. Foi dirixente da Central de Traballadores de Cuba (CTC) e do Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC).[1][2]

Exerceu como ministro de Traballo e Seguridade Social entre 1995 e 1999, data en que foi elixido primeiro secretario do PCC na provincia de Camagüey. É deputado da Asemblea Nacional do Poder Popular dende 1993, integra o Buró Político do Comité Central do Partido Comunista de Cuba e é membro do Consello de Estado, onde exerceu unha das cinco vicepresidencias entre 2013 e 2018.[3][4]

Como un dos vicepresidentes do Consello de Ministros, Salvador Valdés viaxou en misións oficiais a Latinoamérica, África e Asia, onde foi recibido polo presidente chinés Xi Jinping e polo líder norcoreano Kim Jong-un.[5]

O 18 de abril de 2018 foi elixido pola Asemblea Nacional como primeiro vicepresidente do Consello de Estado e, o día seguinte, o recentemente elixido presidente Miguel Díaz-Canel pediu a súa designación como primeiro vicepresidente do Consello de Ministros de Cuba. Aínda que a Constitución cubana non estabelece que o vicepresidente do Consello de Estado sexa o mesmo do Consello de Ministros, pero esta é unha práctica común en Cuba. Con estas designacións, Salvador Valdés é o primeiro afrocubano en converterse en "número dous" dese país caribeño.[5][6]
