Atiu, tamén coñecida como Enuamanu (Terra de paxaros), atópase a 187 km de distancia de Rarotonga, no grupo meridional das Illas Cook.

Xeografía

Atiu é unha illa volcánica rodeada por un arrecife de coral que posúe paredes de coral fosilizado de ata 6 m de altura. As paredes, de medio quilómetro de ancho, bordean a illa formando unha plataforma virtual. É un tipo de illa denominado makatea a partir da illa Makatea das Tuamotu. No interior do anel, a erosión creou unha zona de terra cultivable (café e vainilla), cuxa altura crece ata o centro da illa onde se atopa un outeiro de 71 m de altura.

Esta mesma erosión provocou que a costa estea chea de covas e túneis, onde aniñan diversas especies de aves, entre elas a salangana Aerodramus sawtelli (tamén coñecida como Collocalia sawtelli),[1] denominada kōpeka na lingua maorí das Illas Cook,[2] un endemismo da illa.[3]

A superficie total é de 27 km2. A temperatura é suave cunha media que oscila entre os 24º e os 26 °C.

Asentamentos humanos

Ao contrario da maioría de illas da Polinesia, a poboación vive no centro da illa en cinco aldeas moi próximas: Areora, Ngatiarua, Teenui, Mapumai e Tengatangi. En marzo de 2003, a poboación ascendía a 571 habitantes.

Foi poboada por migracións polinesias desde as illas da Sociedade no século V. Os habitantes de Atiu eran os guerreiros máis temidos das illas Cook, e a súa historia inclúe diversos ataques sanguinarios ás illas veciñas. O primeiro europeo que chegou foi o inglés James Cook en 1777. O segundo foi o evanxelista protestante John Williams, que deixou dous misioneiros de Tahaa.
