Bhain Nicholls clú agus cáil idirnáisiúnta amach mar údar an tsaothair Gaelic and Gaelicised Ireland in the Middle Ages, a foilsíodh ar dtús sa bhliain 1972, agus arís sa bhliain 2003. Tá meas bainte amach fosta aige as ucht a chuid eolais ar fhoinsí meánaoiseacha agus nua-aimseartha as Gaeilge, Laidin, Francis agus Béarla. I measc a suimeanna gairmiúla, tá a leanas:

Ball foirne sa roinn staire Choláiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh ba Nicholls go dtí go ndeachaigh sé ar scor sa bhliain 2004. Bhí sé fostaithe ag an Institiúid Ard-Léinn Bhaile Átha le tréimhse le linn na 1960í.[1] Tugtar ómós dá chuid oibre in Regions and rulers in Ireland, 1100-1650: essays for Kenneth Nicholls, David Edwards (eag.)
